Final Thoughts As A Graduating Senior

Future Wiki Ideas

As a soon-to-be graduate, I have been reflecting on how my four years have gone and how many things I missed or could have improved on in the past. Of course it's never good to have regrets, but sometimes you can learn things by looking back and seeing how you could have affected things. You never know, it could help you in the future. I feel like I found out some of the best things about Syracuse University after I had already spent the majority of my limited time here. I found out which…See More

Final thoughts...

This is my third "digital" type writing course I have taken this year and just as I have enjoyed the format of the other courses I have enjoyed this one as well. As a freshman in college I do not think I would have had the organizational skills, time management skills, etc to preform well in this class. However, as I am now approaching my senior year at Syracuse I am enjoying "work streaming" classes like this one much more than my memorize and listen classes. I like how work streaming classes…See More

Final Thoughts

This class is different than any other course I've taken so far at Syracuse University. For starters, the structure of is not something I've done before. I've never taken an online course, let alone a hybrid course that empathized work outside of the classroom just as much, or arguably even more than inside the classroom. While the class time we had was valuable because it was a good opportunity to discuss readings, ask questions, and decide on wiki issues like categories and tagging, the work…See More

The calm before the storm, or the storm before... the storm?

After the course of this semester, we have learned the ins and outs of essential tools for a successful business... and definitely of creating a usable wikipedia page. I have to say all the aspects of group collaboration via online networking was definitely a more common sense aspect, and the group work in general seemed like fundamentals from grade school. They were definitely more easily applied, though, through our Ning and our required tweets. Bringing video chatting with Jennifer Spadafora…See More

The End.

As the semester reaches it end, a reflection on the course as a whole is in order. Coming into this class, I knew that this Writing course, in particular, was going to be completely different. The class was structured in a way that allowed us to meet in person only once a week for a mere one hour and ten minutes. The way this course was designed made us rely on what Zelenka calls "web working." As Zelenka points out, web working allows us to work where we want, when we want, and with who we…See More

End Game: The Final Blog Post

When reading Connect!, I found it very interesting how they talked about web work and how personal life work together. I realized how if I allowed the web work to interfere with my life it would have. I kept the two very separate from one another. For example when we were asked to make a twitter, I already had one but I wanted to keep work and my personal thoughts to myself. So I created a new twitter just for this class. However, what I did not expect was my friends following the wrong…See More

Final Post

So at the beginning of the course I was a little nervous that I wasn't going to be able to complete the assigned 4,000 words needed for our wiki pages. I tried to find as much information as I could and used everything I had discovered. In the end, I realized that I can do this amount of work and use every tool we've encountered with some ease. The future of the web is in our hands I feel, and being able to manipulate it to our advantage will take us farther than those who do not accept the…See More

Final Thoughts

Initially I felt that the class was going to be very collaborative and we would need to call on each other for assistance and guidance in our work but to me it was more like each person did their own section of the work and thrust it into one huge piece. I have no problem with that at all, I actually prefer that it work that way. The wiki project is a complete success in my opinion. It pretty much blows my mind that we created a complete, functioning wiki for both on campus and off campus…See More

The Creation of a Career

“Great satisfaction and success sometimes requires imbalance and excess, not balance and moderation” (Zelenka, 257). If it’s one thing this course has done over the last three months, it’s exploit this truth. At the outset, I was a little worried about the consequences a “hybrid” course – in-class and online – would entail. More work? Less Work? Even some system I’d have to get used to was threatening to me, because after seven years in academia, I have, I must say, become extremely comfortable…See More

Grand Finale of My Thoughts

Zelenka is right, webworking truly has become a way of life for some people, and those that haven't quite figured out how to fully integrate online with real life will always be a few steps behind. Growing up in what Zelenka labels as the "Myspace Generation", I have always found it particularly easy to integrate both my personal and work life online. Because of my membership of the Myspace Generation, I also have vast experience in "social group-oriented productivity" (281). Whether a group of…See More

My final thoughts...

Going into this class I viewed myself as a relatively tech savvy person, but as the semester progressed I began to realize how little I really knew. I often used social networking for pleasure but rarely for business, and therefore thought this class would be a breeze. Though I started out slow in this class I quickly grew overwhelmed by the new technology that was being thrown at me. From web conferences, to writemaps, to simple use of the blog and outlining tools I quickly began to realize…See More

Final Thoughts

As I reflect back on this semester while reading the last two chapters of Zelenka's Connect I realized how much my attitude towards the web as a workplace has changed. In the first few weeks it was evident that I was hesitant to use social tools like Twitter to connect with classmates and the professor because I saw it as an invasion of privacy. I did not understand why did we have to mix our work with our personal life. It was coincidental that a few weeks after class had started Google’s Buzz…See More

Cassie Marie White commented on Alonna Berry's blog post 'Innovation'
I as well found the wiki project much more involved than I initially expected. Not only did the project encompass the art of working in groups, it as well involved research on our specific topics. Which not only taught us a base of our topic, but it…

Innovation

This semester in WRT 427 I learned a lot about the importance, relevance, and presence of collaborative technologies. In the last chapter of Connect, the author Anne Zelenka comments that now “…you know what it means to be a web worker” (279). She defines a web worker or web working as “…using online tools to connect with a world of people and possibility online” (279). How fitting that Zelenka would title this book “connect” – the web or online is a place that connects one person to another.…See More

This week, you'll finish up polishing your pages and submit them for grading.  You'll also write a final blog post that connects this week's reading with your own reflections on this course.   No comments are necessary.

And that's it!  We're done.  It's been a pleasure working with all of you. We've done good work together, and I wish you the best of luck in the future.  If you'd like to keep in touch, you can find me on LinkedIn or Facebook.  I'd be happy to hear from you.

Week 14 Assignments

Submit an informal usability report to me via email.  Your text should appear in the body of the email, not as an attachment.  It should address:

- the protocols you used in your tests

- your justifications for choosing those protocols

- your testing results

- planned changes for your pages based on those results

Update:  You should also attach your protocol materials.

Your report will ideally describe the results of… Continue

Week 12 & 13 Assignments

We're nearly finished generating the content for the site!  Your highest priority is to finish your 4,000 words by midnight on Saturday, April 10.  Each of your pages should be tagged according to our common schema and feature at least one image or map.

It's important that you complete that on time, because Week 13 is review week.  Each of you will meet with me for a one-on-one conference during the time you signed up for.  Additionally, you will each review five pages on the wiki… Continue

Week 11 Assignments

It's time for the return of the Weekly Note, since our tasks will return to involving more than just hammering out drafts of the wiki pages.  Here's what we're up to this week:

1.  If you're working in a group, be sure to conduct a brief discussion on the forums about common category types and terms that you'll be using.  Remember, consistency is of vital importance.

2. Take a look at the instructions for using the new and improved… Continue

As we discussed in class, this is the week we turn our attention to the SyrGuide Wiki.  Our work here will serve several purposes:

  • it provides a needed resource of consolidated information on the Syracuse area
  • it provides you with an opportunity to gain experience writing informative text for a nonexpert audience
  • it gives all of us on-the-ground experience with distributed teamwork and building out…

- Refine your plans on WriteMaps.  As discussed in class, you need to make sure you have a good, solid vision of what you're… Continue
